Carrum Health Adds New England Baptist Hospital as COE

SAN FRANCISCO October 22, 2018 Carrum Health, the next-generation Center of Excellence platform for self-insured employers, today announced it has added New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) in Boston, Massachusetts as its latest Center of Excellence (COE). The move allows employers in upper New England to choose NEBH as a Center of Excellence for their employees and dependents, while continuing Carrum’s aggressive expansion of its national footprint.

“Carrum Health is distinguished by the highest quality outcomes and a rigorous quality evaluation process, which is why we’ve chosen NEBH as our latest Center of Excellence,” said Sach Jain, CEO at Carrum Health. “The hospital has the highest regional volume of surgeries and is a top-ranked national center of orthopedic care, awarded advanced certification for total knee and total hip replacement, and recognized as a top hospital by U.S. News & World Report in 2018 and 2019 for these procedures.”

“Providing the highest quality of care and best patient experience to our patients is our top priority,” said David A. Passafaro, president of NEBH. “Carrum Health opens up access to new employer groups who could benefit from the expertise of our health care providers. We are thrilled to become a Carrum Health Center of Excellence.”

The new COE fills a gap for current Carrum customers in the region, giving employers a greater choice of locations, and opening the door for Carrum to sign up other regional and national employers. More employers will now have a Carrum Health COE within one to two hours’ driving distance, especially in the upper New England area where the highest quality COE is demanded by employers and employees alike. For employees, the shorter travel distances will translate to higher utilization of Carrum Health. Employees will gain access to increased availability of high-quality surgeons. NEBH will begin serving members starting later this fall.

“With this expansion, Carrum is bringing high value benefits – including better outcomes, shorter recovery times, reduced travel time to providers, and lower and more predictable health care costs – within the reach of hundreds of thousands of New Englanders in Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts,” said Jain.

Some 20 percent of employers will use Center of Excellence programs next year through a vendor such as Carrum Health, according to the National Business Group on Health and Willis Towers Watson surveys. Carrum plans to continue adding COE across the country, with plans to expand into six to eight new markets this year.

Carrum’s groundbreaking bundled payment platform provides prospective, fixed-price bundles for several of the highest-cost medical spend areas, including musculoskeletal, bariatric and cardiac specialties. For providers, this is more attractive than a population-based approach, such as an accountable care organization (ACO), because providers take on only the risk of an individual procedure, not the risk of the health conditions of an entire employee base. As a result, more providers are joining Carrum’s platform and offering its bundles, providing employers and employees with greater choice in more locations.
